Survival food can be anything from a well stocked pantry to emergency food rations such as MRE's or the popular Mountain House freeze dried foods.
It is not as important WHICH kind of survival food we store up as it is to NOT be caught unprepared with nothing stockpiled for emergencies.
Emergency food preparation is simply storing up enough foods to get us through any situation that may come our way.
Freeze Dried Survival Food Options
For MANY folks the easiest option when stockpiling groceries is to simply purchase food units such as the Mountain House freeze dried units.
They have some units that will last a year and if you can't afford to buy the whole unit at once, just get a few cases at a time until you have enough to last for that length of time.
One of the biggest pros about freeze dried foods is the long shelf life. Most of them have a 10 - 20 year shelf life. So no need to fear that it will go bad on us!
Food Rations for Emergency
...or MRE's as they are also called.
The MRE's are a vacuum packed food package with a complete meal in each one.
MRE Advantages:
Each Entree Meal is Pre-Cooked, Ready-to-Eat Can be Eaten Hot or Cold Straight from the Pouch Long 5+ Year Shelf-Life Complete Meal in One Package Great for Emergency Evacuation No Cooking, Preparation or Water Needed (except beverage)
Survival Food List
And there is always the ongoing survival food list for all the items we REALLY do not want to run out of right away - should we have no access to a grocery store for a few weeks or months.
If you are storing food items, they need to be stored in a cool dry place and rotated every six months.
One of the easiest ways to keep your survival food rotated is to store it with your main grocery food supply and just keep it rotated as you use it.
You will want to grab Viola Bontrager's emergency food list on her website at Emergency Survival Skills website.
